Abstract: »The chapter delves into the persistent influence of patriarchal norms and legal frameworks that shaped family dynamics and justice systems during the interwar period. Through critical analysis of historical records, this study reveals how entrenched social hierarchies and bourgeois ideologies reinforced traditional gender roles, confining women to the private sphere and minimizing the gravity of family violence. It explores how femicide, often subsumed under general homicide and dismissed as crimes of passion, was inadequately addressed by the legal system, which prioritized state stability over protecting women’s lives. The chapter examines judicial leniency that legitimized male violence, highlighting the gender biases within courts dominated by male judges. By analyzing parliamentary transcripts, legal journals, and homicide case records, this work uncovers the political and cultural narratives that allowed gender-based violence to persist unchallenged.
